Mphatlalatsane E.C.C.D Special Initiative

This program is done in collaboration with USAID/PEPFAR, Management Sciences for Health (MSH) ,Government of Lesotho, GROW and Stellenbosch University in South Africa to develop, implement and evaluate the Lesotho ECCD special initiative. It’s a program integrating HIV testing and treatment services, nutrition and parenting practices for children aged 1-5 years into rural communities through Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) centres. It is a three-year randomized control trial (RCT). The intervention is a multipronged approach utilizing trained facilitators to deliver a caregiver to child cognitive stimulation mentorship, as well as mobilizing existing community resources to increase access and utilization.

Through mentoring caregivers gathered at ECCD centres, facilitators will capacitate the caregivers to support the development of children’s attentions skills. Key aspects of the cognitive stimulation capacitation for caregivers include praise, displays of warmth, responsiveness and sensitivity during episodes of joint attention.
